The Gatton Academy 10-year celebration will take place August 19-21, 2017. In the spirit of our 10-year anniversary, we have created 10 events for our alumni and their guests to enjoy throughout the weekend!

Saturday, August 19, 2017

1. Alumni Class with Professor Rutledge

Relive a Harlaxton day with Professor Rutledge (bow tie included).  You’ll need to have done your reading before class starts.  The assignment?  Western Kentucky’s own Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Penn Warren’s short-story “Blackberry Winter.”

In classic Harlaxton tradition with a Kentucky twist, the day’s reading will be discussed in class, followed by a field trip to bring the story to life.  You’ll journey down the halls of Cherry Hall, visiting the Robert Penn Warren room and meeting Dr. Mary Ellen Miller (who has taught at WKU longer than any other faculty member).  She helped start the Center for Robert Penn Warren Studies.  Then, you’ll venture on down to the Kentucky Library with Prof. Rutledge to visit the Center, complete with all of Robert Penn Warren’s original materials, including the furniture from his office.  It’s as if he might walk in and pen a new story.

Time: Saturday, August 19 | 10:00 AM- 12:00 PM
Location: Cherry Hall and on-campus literary field trip
Limit 30 Alumni
Cost: $5

2. Alumni Class with Claus & Uta

Title: CPS Theater?
Prerequisite: Must have taken advanced computational problem solving and must have interest in poking fun & laughing.

Abstract: CPS is a unique class and in this session we want to remember and capture some of this uniqueness. We (the instructors) start the session with a comedy-sketch of our favorite CPS stories. Consider this the warm-up for the main part of the session: We ask you to work in groups and to come up with your own CPS comedy sketches – and perform them in the end.  No acting skills required – and you don’t even have to remember your lines – reading them off a paper is perfectly fine.

Time: Saturday, August 19 | 10:00 AM- 12:00 PM
Location: Florence Schneider Hall-Great Hall
Limit: 30 Alumni
Cost: $5
